Message from President Jeni:

Labor Day weekend marks the traditional start of the election season, and so it is in the Central Valley. Political signs are popping up everywhere! Even so, you’ve heard me say again and again in the last few months that Clovis has few competitive races in which to get involved: California is going to go for Hillary, even if Clovis does not; our next Senator is going to be a Democratic woman of color, no matter who wins; two Republicans are running in the Assembly race. But none of these races are especially exciting or interesting to Clovis residents. It turns out, though, that the action in Clovis will be in the education arena. Our own club member and treasurer, David Rowell, is running for State Center Community College District Trustee representing Area 6. Anyone who wants to get involved should contact him at 559-825-1239. He needs walkers, phone bankers, office help, and even assistance in setting up lunches and snacks for walkers.

Another educational election to watch is for the Clovis Unified School District Board. Recently, Clovis has been struggling with dress codes and compliance with federal and state transgender bathroom access. An organization called Stop the Madness has encouraged a number of very conservative people to run for the four board positions that are up for election. If they are successful, the school district could be dramatically impacted. We will be hearing from a strong Democratic candidate, Scott Troescher, who is running in opposition to this group.

Trump Still Highly Popular With Rednecks
The only group he hasn’t insulted, yet.

Nathan Magsig

Our September speaker is newly elected Fresno County Supervisor, Nathan Magsig. A veteran member of the Clovis City Council, including his most recent position as Mayor Pro Tem. He will provide insights for us on the issues surrounding his transition from a city to a county office.

Dr. Holyoke provided an intriguing look at both national and local elections pending this November. The continued erosion of party support for Donald Trump was a particular focus.

What a great picnic we had! Our room was full of Democrats enjoying camaraderie and celebrating our nation. It was a privilege to hear Fiona Ma, a candidate for statewide office. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this event! Our Club is making its mark in the local political scene.

Despite the unity shown in our picnic, early July has been marked nationally with conflict and tragedy with several police shootings of citizens followed by the sniper killings of police officers in Dallas. It appears that divisiveness in our political climate has reached a crisis point with the politics of demonizing the “other” culminating in fear and blame. Daily protests have been occurring across the country and tensions have been high. It is too early to tell how these events are going to resolve, but the party nominating conventions are starting with the Republicans next week. Whether we move toward more divisiveness or more conciliation within our country may depend on the way these conventions address the issues. My hope is that it will be toward conciliation.

A theme that President Obama has returned to repeatedly as a step toward bringing people together is to see the world through somebody else’s eyes, and to stand in somebody else’s shoes. In an effort to move in this direction, our club has invited Reza Nekumanesh to talk to speak of the experience of Muslims in American society. Please join us for this very informative presentation and for our first ever meeting in the month of July!
